Measure once, build one purchase list
- Split irregular beds into non-overlapping rectangles, circles or triangles. For a ring, measure both the outer and excluded inner diameter.
- Replace the example measurements. Switching feet and metres converts the values already entered.
- Ask your supplier how much area one bale covers at 3 inches. Enter that coverage, your planned layer depth and an optional quoted price.
- Review the combined order. Bales are rounded up once across all beds; taxes, delivery, labour and extra material are not included.

How depth and coverage affect the estimate
Effective coverage = quoted coverage at 3 inches x 3 / planned depth. Whole bales = round up(total area / effective coverage). Loose volume in cubic yards = area in square feet x depth in inches / 324. Scaling assumes constant volume; real bale density and settling vary. Confirm suitable depth and coverage before ordering.

How many bales do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
With the example coverage of 45 sq ft per bale at a 3-inch layer, round up 1,000 / 45 to 23 bales. Replace the example coverage with a supplier quote.
Can I use metres?
Yes. Switching units converts existing dimensions without changing the physical bed area. Supplier coverage remains in square feet and depth remains in inches. The offline workbook uses area in square feet.
Why is the purchase total different from adding rounded bales for each bed?
The planner combines the areas before rounding to whole bales. Rounding every bed separately can overstate an order when leftover material can be shared between beds.
What is in the editable planner?
